The Suzanne Dellal Centre for Dance and Theatre occupies two of the finest buildings in Neve Tzedek, Tel Aviv's oldest neighbourhood.
They were built at the turn of the twentieth century as the neighbourhood's schools for girls and boys, separated by a lane that locals called, with minimal imagination, Schools' Street. After closing in the 1970s, the buildings were restored and reopened in 1989. Workers digging during the renovation found a well beneath the courtyard.
Today, the centre is home to the Batsheva Dance Company, one of the world's leading contemporary dance companies, and the piazza between the two buildings has become the social heart of Neve Tzedek.
VoiceMap's self-guided audio tours use the centre as a starting point to explore the neighbourhood's founding families, tracing the Chelouche family's journey from Morocco to Jaffa and the Jewish settlement that grew into Tel Aviv.
