Provincetown Portuguese Bakery has been selling malasadas since 1900, when Cape Verdean and Azorean fishermen’s wives opened its doors to feed homesick crews. The dough has a thrifty origin: malasadas began as Lent’s leftover enriched dough.
Inside the narrow shop, glass cases hold malasadas, linguiça rolls and pastéis still warm from the oven. Locals remember a then-unknown Al Pacino buying coffee here in 1971, before the Godfather.
VoiceMap’s tours stop here to show the Portuguese layer beneath Provincetown’s reinventions, from fishing port to the nation’s queer summer capital.
