In 1980, a Coast Guard cutter lost power in a storm and slammed into a decaying wharf. A fire then destroyed most of the buildings left standing, and the burned site is now Cannery Wharf Park.
The wharf, built in 1902, served the Cape Cod Cold Storage and Fish Cannery Plant, the last survivor of Provincetown’s Portuguese-American fishing empire. It handled millions of pounds of cod, haddock and mackerel while the town was heralded as America’s greatest fishing port.
Today, weathered timbers and signs honour the fishermen who built Provincetown. VoiceMap’s tours use the site to trace how the town moved from fishing to art, tourism and its LGBTQ+ spirit.
