Bob Gasoi cut hair at the Nut House for forty years and quietly championed outsider artists. Since 2017, the Bob Gasoi Memorial Art Alley has honoured him by turning a drab service corridor into an ever-changing outdoor gallery.
It started with one mural of his smiling face. Now drag queens in full regalia pose against neon portraits, giant octopuses wrap around dumpsters and poems by Mary Oliver sit beside queer comics. Every Carnival week adds new layers, with glitter embedded in wet paint.
VoiceMap’s tours stop here to meet the alley’s regulars. Local legends such as John Dowd, Jay Critchley and Ryan Landry have left their marks, and so have art students and visitors with spray cans.
