The Walt Disney Amphitheater has stood in some form at Lake Eola's west bank since 1886, though the original bandshell was something rather different. Designed by Isabel Roberts and Ida Ryan, it was among the first all-female architectural firms in the country. A replacement came in the 1950s, and in 1989 Walt Disney World donated and dedicated the current structure, lending it the name locals still sometimes shorten to "the bandshell."
Today the amphitheater is as recognisable for its rainbow colour scheme and retro scalloped design as for its programme of outdoor movies, plays, and holiday events. On the Fourth of July it's the best seat in Orlando for fireworks over the lake.
VoiceMap's self-guided audio tours trace the amphitheater's lineage from its pioneering all-female designers to Disney's later patronage. They place it within a broader walk around Lake Eola's public art, swan boats, and downtown skyline.
