Fishermen have sold their catch directly to the public at the foot of Newport Beach Pier since 1891. The pier’s roots go back further, to McFadden Wharf, built in 1888 to unload lumber and hides.
A storm destroyed the wooden pier in 1939, and the city rebuilt it the following year. Today it stands at the end of 21st Street on Balboa Peninsula, where people fish, stroll and watch the sunset.
VoiceMap’s Orange County audio tours point it out and mention the paid lot for stretching your legs. Two of them also send you to the Dory fish market for fresh catch, and to Blackies by the Sea, a boardwalk tavern.
