Museo Picasso Málaga occupies a sixteenth-century Andalusian palace Picasso himself never saw from inside. He lived most of his adult life in France and refused to return to Spain while General Franco ruled, so his hometown’s museum did not open until 2003, three decades after his death. The Palacio de Buenavista’s galleries now hold more than 230 of his works.
Beneath the Renaissance and Mudéjar stonework lie Phoenician and Roman remains, so a visit means crossing two millennia of history before meeting a single Cubist line. Picasso was born a few streets away in 1881 and baptised with twenty-three names. The city holds one of only three official Picasso museums, alongside Paris and Barcelona.
VoiceMap’s audio tours trace these roots through the old town, from his birth house to his baptismal church, and on to the museum that finally granted his wish to come home.
