Malaga Museum
About
Before it became the Museum of Málaga, this handsome Renaissance-style building beside the park had already served as a customs house, a tobacco factory and, less gloriously, a prison. It was here that Frank Sinatra spent a night in the cells after a scuffle over an autograph and a flying glass, while filming nearby in Torremolinos. He never came back.

The building’s past is tougher than its résumé suggests. A fire in 1922 killed twenty-eight staff who lived on its roof and cost it the mansard style it once shared with the Louvre. Inside today, the city’s archaeological and fine arts collections share quarters: Roman mosaics, Islamic Nasrid pottery, and the remarkably preserved tomb of a Greek mercenary, unearthed only in 2012.

VoiceMap’s tours use the museum to trace Málaga’s turn from customs post to cultural capital, showing how a trading city became one built on Picasso.
