Angels Flight Railway
About
Angels Flight has spent over a century being modest about being famous. Billed since 1901 as the world's shortest railway, this orange and black funicular hauls two cars, Sinai and Olivet, up 298 feet of Bunker Hill at a stomach-tightening 33 percent grade. Colonel J.W. Eddy built it as a shortcut for residents too weary to climb the hill on foot, and for decades it carried more passengers per mile than any grander railway managed.

The city dismantled it in 1969 during Bunker Hill's redevelopment, then resurrected it in 1996 a block from its original spot. A dollar buys the ride, from Grand Central Market's bustle to California Plaza in under a minute.

VoiceMap's self-guided Downtown Los Angeles tours use Angels Flight as a hinge point, connecting the neighbourhood's Gilded Age mansions to the glass towers that replaced them, and revealing how redevelopment reshaped Bunker Hill from the ground up.
