The gift shop outside The World of Beatrix Potter sells more or less the same stock as the one inside, a small detail that tells you everything about how thoroughly this Bowness attraction has cornered its market.

Squeezed between a supermarket and the old town, it recreates three-dimensional scenes from Potter's twenty-three books, Peter Rabbit and Jemima Puddle-Duck included, complete with sounds and, rather ambitiously, smells. Outside sits the Peter Rabbit Garden, modelled on the cottage plot she sketched into her illustrations, and inside the main building, tucked past the trail, is the Old Laundry Theatre, so named because Bowness hoteliers once sent their sheets here for washing.
