St Nicholas' Collegiate Church has stood on the same Galway site since 1320, when it was founded by the Knights Templar and dedicated to the patron saint of mariners and children. It is the largest medieval parish church in Ireland still in continuous use, a remarkable claim after seven centuries.
The gargoyles above the entrance each represent one of the seven deadly sins, a warning to those passing through. Inside, a replica of the 1651 map of Galway shows the medieval city in full, commissioned to raise £20,000 from the Duke of Lorraine for the city's defence against Cromwell. Christopher Columbus is said to have prayed here in 1477, stopping in Galway on a voyage between Bristol and Iceland.
VoiceMap's tours use the church to anchor stories of the Knights Templar, Cromwell's siege, and a medieval trading city whose street plan has barely changed since the map was drawn.
