Düsseldorf’s Town Hall is really a row of buildings from different centuries. The city’s first town hall went up in the 1400s, reportedly on Ratingerstrasse in 1470, and was replaced more than once. The present building on the market square dates partly from 1573.
Beside it stands the Grupello House, from 1706, and a section added after the Second World War. In front, a statue of the ruler Jan Wellem says it was “erected by grateful citizens”. In fact, Jan Wellem ordered it himself while he was alive.
VoiceMap’s Düsseldorf tour stops in the square to list the Town Hall’s parts and their dates, explain the statue’s inscription, and then sends you down Bolkerstrasse, nicknamed “the longest bar in the world”.
