The Dunedin Public Art Gallery occupies a building that once sold furniture and frocks. Before it became one of New Zealand's oldest and most significant public art collections, its handsome Octagon premises began life in the 1930s as the DIC department store. There is something pleasingly Dunedin about that. A place built for browsing hemlines now houses browsing crowds admiring paintings instead.

Inside, the collection ranges from local painters to international names. It sits a short stroll from the cinemas and cafes that keep the Octagon busy today. Among the gallery's more curious residents is a portrait by Toss Woollaston. It depicts Elizabeth 'Grannie' Gunn, a Scottish widow once feared across the harbour suburb of Ravensbourne as its resident witch.
