Victoria Row
About
Victoria Row is Richmond Street's pedestrian-friendly stretch in the heart of Charlottetown, and it has a habit of rising from the ashes. Literally. In 1884, a man attempting to poison rats knocked over his lantern and accidentally torched the entire block, an area once nicknamed "Cheapside" for its thrifty shops. The rebuilt street used stone and brick, a decision that paid off in 1938 when fire struck again and the buildings held.

Closed to vehicles each summer since 1997, the street now fills with musicians, lobster restaurants and kilt shops where Cheapside once stood.

VoiceMap's self-guided audio tours use Victoria Row to trace Charlottetown's cycles of destruction and reinvention, connecting the 1884 fire to the broader story of a city that repeatedly rebuilt itself, and explaining how a street once synonymous with bargain-hunting became one of its most-visited corners.
