Château et remparts de la cité de Carcassonne
About
The Château et Remparts de la Cité de Carcassonne represent the most complete surviving example of medieval military architecture in Europe.

The double ring of walls, punctuated by towers and elaborate barbicans designed as killing zones, encircles a hilltop that has been fortified since Neolithic times. The Château Comtal at its heart has a dry ditch rather than a moat, a deliberate choice: water-filled moats suit flat ground, but on a hill, a ditch serves just as well and costs far less.

What makes the fortifications unusual is the castle's inner barbican, which faced inward toward the Cité itself. The French, having seized the city from its Occitan rulers, trusted their new neighbours about as far as a crossbow bolt could travel.

VoiceMap's self-guided audio tour moves through the lists between the walls, unpacking the logic of each defensive feature and tracing the castle's history from Viscount to French crown to near-demolition and eventual UNESCO recognition.
