Galerie Bordelaise
About
La Galerie Bordelaise, built in 1830, owes its existence to a revolution.

Four merchants who fled the Mexican War of Independence arrived in Bordeaux and pooled their resources to create one of the city's first covered shopping passages. The outcome is the elegant arcade of glass and ironwork tucked between Rue Sainte-Catherine and Rue du Temple.

Paris has around thirty such passages still functioning. Bordeaux has two. La Galerie Bordelaise is one of them, which makes it something of a rarity. It was once fiercely fashionable, drawing comparisons to the best of the Parisian arcades. Today, its appearance is a little worn at the edges, which only adds to its appeal.

VoiceMap's audio tours trace the passage's origins from South America to southwest France, connecting it to Bordeaux's broader history as a port city shaped by Atlantic trade.
