Bern's Kindlifresserbrunnen means Child Eater Fountain, and it lives up to the name. The statue shows an ogre eating a child, with a bag of eight more beside him. The fountain dates from 1545, and nobody can say for certain why the town put him there.
One theory casts the ogre as Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy, trying to swallow the eight cantons of the old Swiss Confederacy. A frieze of armed bears marching to war behind a piper and a drummer, round the base, backs it up. Others say he taught children to behave, or that he is Kronos, the Greek titan who ate his own children.
VoiceMap's self-guided audio tours walk past the fountain with both camps. One tour argues for Charles the Bold and the bears. The other offers a lesson in good behaviour and a titan from Greek myth, or his Roman counterpart, Saturn.
