Bern Minster was built to make a statement. In the early 1400s, Bern was an influential city-state, and it commissioned this late Gothic church to show it. The spire rises 100 metres, and the building took more than 150 years to finish.
Then the Reformation changed the rules. The church, originally Catholic, has been Protestant since 1528, and many of its features did not survive. The main portal did, with more than 294 carved figures in a Last Judgement. Lady Justice, at its centre, was added afterwards.
VoiceMap's self-guided audio tour ends beside the Minster. It reads the portal, then moves to the terrace, where religious art was buried as deep as 14 metres. A second tour passes the church on its way down to the river Aare.
