The Acropolis of Athens
About
The Acropolis of Athens has been sacred ground for 5,000 years, but the temples you see today owe everything to a defeat. When Persians sacked the original shrines in 480 BCE, the Athenians swore never to rebuild.

It took three decades and Pericles' persuasion to change their minds, and what followed was the most ambitious building project the ancient Greek world had ever seen: 400,000 tons of marble, quarried eleven miles away and carted by mule, transformed into the Parthenon, the Erechtheion and the monumental Propylaea gates.

Among its quieter stories: The name itself is pleasingly literal: "acro" means high, "polis" means city; Socrates worked here as a stonemason; and two teenagers tore down the Nazi swastika in 1941.

VoiceMap's self-guided audio tours trace the political propaganda embedded in every column, reveal where Poseidon's trident supposedly struck the rock, and explain why modern restorers may never match the ancient craftsmen's skill.
