About the Tour

Sydney’s architecture tells a story of how Australia’s largest city evolved from a colonial outpost into a modern metropolis.

On this architectural walking tour, you’ll hear the stories behind its most significant landmarks and structures, and find out how a series of fascinating characters has shaped this harbour city.

The tour starts at Sydney Town Hall, built directly above an old burial ground, where you’ll hear its haunted history. You’ll make your way through the city centre, exploring grand buildings including the ornate Queen Victoria Building with its stunning copper-domed roof, and past the Sydney Tower Eye, the tallest structure in the city.

As you walk, you’ll hear about the mysterious disappearance of the QVB’s solid gold key, and discover the fiery past of St. Mary’s Cathedral. The tour ends at Circular Quay, where you can take in spectacular views of the Opera House and Harbour Bridge, and continue exploring Sydney’s most iconic spot.

On this 60-minute tour, you’ll have a chance to:

  • Explore the elegant Strand Arcade, one of Sydney’s earliest shopping destinations, still operating today
  • Hear about Sydney’s water-filled “ghost tunnels” beneath St. James Station that once served as WWII bomb shelters
  • Visit the historic Mint, Sydney’s oldest surviving public building with its intriguing rum-fueled origin story
  • Learn about the Aboriginal history of the area and the impact of European settlement on the Gadigal people
  • See the archaeological remains of Australia’s First Government House, the original seat of colonial power
  • Learn about Australian stereotypes, foods, traditions and a very famous (and mischievous) Aussie bird

Take a journey through Sydney’s foundations to its skylines and discover the fascinating stories behind the buildings that have shaped this vibrant harbour city.

Tips

Places to stop along the way

If you’re feeling hungry, I’d recommend heading to a classic Aussie pub. The Glenmore Hotel has a great rooftop bar with stunning views of the Opera House and the Harbour. If you are looking for a more historic vibe, check out The Fortune of War pub. Both pubs are located in The Rocks and will be close to where the tour ends in Circular Quay.

Best time of day

The best time to do this tour is around 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM. Most things in this tour are open to visit during this time.

Precautions

The Aussie sun is no joke! Remember our saying: Slip, Slop, Slap! That’s slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen, and slap on a hat. Watch out for trams and cars, and use pedestrian crossings along the way.
