About the Tour

Perth has a vibrant history, from its Indigenous roots to its colonial beginnings. On this captivating walking tour of the city centre, you’ll trace its origins, hearing about the rich Whadjuk culture, the arrival of British settlers, and the dramatic impact of colonization.

Our tour begins at Kings Park, below the State War Memorial, with unrivaled views of Perth’s skyline and the Swan River. You’ll descend Jacob’s Ladder, a historic staircase, and head to Elizabeth Quay, where the river meets modern Perth. I’ll tell you how the Whadjuk people thrived here for 50,000 years and why the river was sacred.

As you walk, I’ll tell you about the struggles of early settlers who felt misled by the British Government, and the profound impact the settlement had on the Whadjuk culture. The tour ends outside London Court, a charming Tudor-style shopping arcade.

Along this 75-minute tour you’ll have the chance to see:

  • The famous sculpture, Spanda, a modern symbol of connection by the river, and the ‘Site of First Contact,’ marked by Laurel Nannup’s evocative sculpture
  • Elizabeth Quay Island, a vibrant riverside hub
  • The Bell Tower, home to historic bells from London
  • Stirling Gardens, a serene oasis named after the colony’s founder, where you’ll hear about Captain James Stirling, who founded the colony in 1829
  • Famous sites like Government House, a grand symbol of colonial ambition, and St George’s Cathedral

By the end of this tour, you’ll be enchanted by Perth’s beauty and its layered history. From the Whadjuk’s ancient connection to the land, to the challenges of the Swan River Colony, you’ll have gained a deeper appreciation for this remarkable city. Come fall in love with Perth’s story, and maybe even catch a riverside sunset to cap it off!

Tips

Places to stop along the way

If you'd like to spend a little time enjoying Kings Park before the tour sets off into the city, take a look around - and you can grab a bite to eat before you leave, too. Frasers' Restaurant is very close to our starting point, just above the war memorial. If you'd prefer something a bit more casual, there's a nice cafe just next door to it, with a nice outdoor seating area - or you can take away and eat in the park.

Best time of day

Dawn till dusk. Recommended from 10 am to 4 pm, just to make sure things are open on the way, like cafes and restaurants. Otherwise, it's mostly outdoors, with a few stop-offs on the way, so daytime is a good time.

Precautions

Summer gets hot, so bring a sun hat and wear sunblock, and bring a bottle of water to stay refreshed. Wear light clothes and your sunnies. There are plenty of cafes and restaurants on the way, so no need to bring food.

All locations are regarded as safe areas, but just to be sure, don't bring valuables, and tuck your precious items into a backpack.
