About the Tour

Perth is a unique Australian city that’s packed with exciting architecture, colourful characters, contemporary sculptures, and engaging local history. On this walking tour, you’ll explore the heart of its business district, hearing stories about colonial settlement, Aboriginal heritage, and the people who shaped this unique metropolis.

This tour starts at Perth Train Station on Wellington Street and past historic arcades and pedestrian malls. You’ll discover how this small city developed within tight constraints, with the Swan River to the south and east, swamp land to the north, and Kings Park to the west.

You’ll pass grand government buildings and peaceful garden retreats, and experience the diverse elements that make Perth special. The tour ends at Elizabeth Quay Train Station, where an entertaining amusement park once drew crowds with its charitable competitions.

On this hour-long tour, you’ll have a chance to:

  • Discover the ’Big Green Cactus’ sculpture that cost a million dollars and divides public opinion
  • Admire the Old Perth GPO’s Beaux Arts architecture, built on nine-meter Jarrah logs due to unstable soil
  • See Percy Button’s bronze statue caught mid-handstand, celebrating this famous 1930s street entertainer
  • Watch the ’Jousting Knights’ perform every hour at London Court’s medieval entrance
  • Walk through St George’s Cathedral with its majestic vaulted ceilings and rose window
  • Stand among the bronze kangaroos on St George’s Terrace next to the giant blue astronaut sculpture, which honors NASA astronaut John Glenn
  • Visit Stirling Gardens, Perth’s oldest public space, where colonial botanist James Drummond worked
  • Learn about Captain James Stirling’s founding ceremony for the Swan River Colony in 1829

By the end of this tour, you’ll have encountered the blend of local history, culture, and architecture that makes Perth an unforgettable destination, and a photographer’s dream come true.

I am an accredited Tour Guide with over thirty years experience exploring both the Australian outback and cities alike. I have worked for many tour companies of varying sizes that have given me the capacity to work with and cater for the needs of many different types of personalities and tour groups.

I enjoy the interaction between visitors and guests alike by showing them the many fascinating places and sharing their local stories. The depth of this knowledge and understanding was gleaned over many years of guiding.

My tours are a great insight into the local culture, history, geology, architecture and biodiversity of the areas that I have toured.

I hope you will enjoy the apps as much as I did making them.

See you on tour...

Getting There

Route Overview

VoiceMap tours follow a route from a set starting point. It’s how we give turn-by-turn directions and tell a story greater than the sum of its parts.
  1. Total distance
    3km
  2. Final location
    Perth WA 6000, Australia
  3. Distance back to start location
    668.58m

Directions to Starting Point

This walking tour begins in front of the above ground Perth City Railway Station on Wellington Street, right in the heart of the City of Perth in Western Australia. It's very easy to get to by rail from all directions. From the Northern Yanchep line, the southern Mandurah and Armadale lines, the western Fremantle line, the eastern Midland line or directly off the plane from the Perth airport line. It's an absolute breeze and you don't need a car. However, if you are driving there is ample parking around the station but a word to the wise in that earlier is better.

Tips

Places to stop along the way

There is an oversupply of great restaurants, bars and coffee shops in the Perth CBD. The Oyster Bar on Elizabeth Quay is one of my favorites. There are also places of architectural and historical importance that needs more time to explore. On this tour I recommend that you go inside St Georges Cathedral on St Georges Terrace and have a good look at the high ceilings and stain glass windows. The inside of the Old (But recently restored) Government Buildings on St Georges Terrace is also worth a look.

Best time of day

From 7.30am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday and 8.00am to 6.00pm Saturdays & Sundays.

Precautions

There has been an increase in homeless people in the CBD over the recent years. While they don't present an immediate concern visitors are cautioned not to approach.

App Store Review
“Great app. walk around at your own pace, stop where you want, move on or speed up when you want. Read the script before you go or during the commentary, speed it up or replay it. Repeat the tour whenever you like.”
