Theatreland Tour with Ian McKellen
Turn left into New Row
There’s a zebra crossing coming up. Cross there. Follow the small road that forks off to the left. You should pass the Roundhouse Pub on your right.
Now listen carefully. You’re soon to pass through the most vile and wretched street in all of London. At least it was considered so in 1895. The journalist George Augustus Sala wrote this :
"There is a wretched little haunt called Bedfordbury, a devious, slimy little reptile of a place...I don’t think there are five windows in Bedfordbury with a whole pane of glass in them. Rags are hung from poles, like banners from the outward walls. Confound the place!”
