Theatreland Tour with Ian McKellen
Turn right here, up Carting Lane. Sorry, it’s uphill. Can’t be helped. London, like Rome, is built on seven hills.
More often than not you can smell the Savoy’s kitchens on this lane. A very luxurious hotel, the Savoy. Famous for its food and drink. I’ve always rather envied the late Sir Noel Coward, the great songwriter and performer.
During an air raid in the Second World War - what was called the blitz - he got up on a table at the Savoy and sang to the terrified clientele and he calmed them down. And the management was so pleased with this that he was rewarded with a free room whenever he wanted it and he took full advantage.
