Theatreland Tour with Ian McKellen
Approaching Theatre Royal Drury Lane
So, turn right under the colonnade.
You’ve now got the Fortune Theatre on your right. And on your left is the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, one of the oldest operating theatres in London.
Look at the blue doors as you walk.
There’s a royal coat of arms above most of them. They signify that this was once a Theatre Royal, one of the few theatres in London permitted by the King to produce plays. Censorship of the spoken word was very strict in the 17th and 18th centuries and only Theatre Royals could produce plays.
