Sydney’s Iconic Sights: From the Historical Rocks District to the Opera House
About the Tour
Sydney’s oldest neighbourhood, The Rocks, is bursting with history, culture, and world-famous sights. On this walking tour, where iconic landmarks meet unforgettable stories, you’ll experience the city’s lively energy and unique Aussie spirit firsthand.
The tour begins at the stately Customs House, a grand building from 1845, where Sydney’s early settlers once arrived. You’ll pass through Herald Square, filled with eye-catching sculptures and fountains, before stopping for a taste of colonial charm at the legendary Fortune of War, Sydney’s oldest pub, where early residents shared a pint and a tale.
You’ll have a chance to pause for some timeless snaps of the opera house from the cruise terminal before stopping at the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, where I’ll tell you about the venue’s origins. The tour ends at the Sydney Opera House and Opera Bar with breathtaking views of another of the city’s crown jewels, the Harbour Bridge, the colossal ”Coathanger” that stretches across the harbour.
Along the way, you’ll have a chance to:
- See the First Impressions sculpture, a tribute to the early settlers and convicts who shaped Sydney’s beginnings
- Amble down Nurses Walk, a hidden historic laneway nestled between cafés and local gift shops
- Listen to tales of Sydney’s colonial past while taking in Cadmans Cottage, the historical home built in 1816
- Explore spots like the Argyle Cut, Sydney’s historic sandstone tunnel, and the Mercantile Hotel, Australia’s oldest Irish pub
- Have a look for a celebrity seal sunbathing at Benny Seal Resting Point, a quirky spot known for its regular visitor
This 75-minute tour weaves together Sydney’s past and present, offering historical insights, iconic sights, and unforgettable views.
Join me on this Sydney walking tour to experience the city’s essence, from ancient heritage to modern marvels.
Tour Producer
Lauren van der Merwe
Originally from South Africa, Lauren van der Merwe is a Sydney-based storyteller with a marketer’s instinct for a good narrative and a traveller’s habit of asking, “Okay—but what really happened here?” She’s lived in Sydney for the past nine years, travelled to 50+ countries, and still insists Sydney is one of the best cities in the world (even after extensive “research”).
By day, Lauren works in marketing, where storytelling is the job. Off the clock, it’s the joy: planning the next trip, learning the context behind a place, and turning those details into something you can actually feel as you walk around. Her style balances important history—including respect for First Nations peoples—with fun, human, often humorous tales about the moments and personalities that shaped Australia.
Lauren published her first VoiceMap audio tour in October 2024, sharing the icons people expect—yes, the Opera House and Harbour Bridge—alongside the places that carry the city’s true character. She has a soft spot for old pubs and historic corners, because if those walls could talk, they’d have better stories than most of us.
Lauren speaks English and Afrikaans and is happiest with a map open and a new place to fall in love with.

Places to stop along the way
There will be plenty of places to stop for food and drinks along the way. I'll also point out the high-end stores and pass many spots to purchase local arts and crafts. We'll pass the Museum of Contemporary Art and there are public toilets available on the route.
Best time of day
This tour can be done at any time. However, if you want to avoid crowds, it is best to do it before 10 a.m. The markets in The Rocks are open on weekends and have a lively atmosphere.
Precautions
The sun can be harsh, so be sure to wear sun protection during the day. The route is flat, so well suited to all levels of fitness. However, there is one flight of stairs that you need to go down.
