About the Tour

Stroll along streets lined with southern live oak trees draped in Spanish moss on this walking tour of beautiful Savannah. You’ll discover how and why the city was established, and learn about the battles that were fought here. You’ll hear stories filled with intrigue and, as Savannah’s southern charm draws you in, I’ll tell you how this city has grown into the popular destination it is today.

High points along the way include:

• Discovering the history and home of the Gordon family, along with Juliette Gordon Low, the founder of the Girl Scouts
• Seeing where Forrest Gump sat with his box of chocolates
• Exploring a former battleground
• Finding out why Savannah is the most haunted city in the country

This tour covers all that, and much more. Our walk begins in Wright Square and ends at Forsyth Park, and there’ll be plenty of opportunities for you to enjoy your surroundings and truly savour Savannah.

My name is Rose, I am the owner of Explore Savannah, a walking tour company. I grew up in NE Ohio, where not much happened that was written in the history books. It wasn't until I moved to the south that I began to see and understand how rich our history truly is. My husband is from South Carolina, one of the original 13 colonies and his family history dates back to those colonial days. Being married to Rick has inspired me to learn more about our history. Moving to Savannah in the spring of 2016, I truly began to appreciate and dig deeper to learn all I could about Savannah and her rich and inspiring history. My perspective is much like yours, being able to see and experience her historic district with fresh eyes and admiration.

How VoiceMap Works

Focus on your surroundings, not the screen

VoiceMap’s audio tour app uses GPS to play audio automatically, at the right time and place. Just install it, then download your tour and go to the starting point to begin your walk, drive, cycle, train trip or even boat ride.

Follow a route with turn-by-turn-directions

Tours follow a route from a fixed starting point. This is how we provide turn-by-turn directions. It also helps publishers tell a story greater than the sum of its parts. But you can use Resume to pick up a tour from the closest location whenever you like.

Listen as many times as you like

You can listen to your tours as often as you like using both the VoiceMap app and the VoiceMap website. Your access to tours doesn’t expire.

Take virtual tours anywhere

Just select Virtual mode in the VoiceMap app to listen to tours at home – or anywhere else. You’ll see the option after you download the tour. You can also listen to the whole tour at voicemap.me.

Buy for less on voicemap.me and sync

Once you’ve purchased a tour, it’s added to your VoiceMap library. If you sign into the app using the same method you used on the website, you’ll have access to your full library of tours in both places.

Use VoiceMap offline

The VoiceMap app works entirely offline if there’s no data connection, so you don’t have to pay roaming fees. Just download the tour over WiFi before you get started.

Tips

Places to stop along the way

Wright Square Cafe, Six Pence Pub, Espresso Coffee, The Public Kitchen,Gryphon Tea Room, and Arts Cafe are all great places to stop for lunch or dinner along your route. Frieze Savannah (Wright Square), E. Shaver's Bookstore (Madison Square), and SCAD Shop (Madison Square) are a few interesting shops to stop at. Homes that can be toured along the way are the Sorrel-Weed House and Green-Meldrim Home. The Green-Meldrim house is our favorite house to tour, if the house is open, we highly recommend you take time to tour this home. Towards the end of your route on Monterrey Square, you will find the Mercer-Williams house, made famous by the book and movie "Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil.

Best time of day

Anytime of day.

Precautions

Watch your step, many of the sidewalks are uneven due to the live oak trees. You will be crossing many streets, please be aware of the traffic.

Doing a tour at our own pace was a pleasant experience. The narration was succinct enough so that we could also take in all the landmarks described. I recommend to any couple looking for an affordable and relaxed tour experience.

Nicely done, very simple to use. I preferred it over a bus tour.

Very well done!

The narrator gave almost no information about the role of enslaved people in building the city and its historical district.

Holly, Thank you for taking my tour. I'm glad you stopped at the Mercer-Williams House, it's a wonderful house to tour! Did it make you want to read "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" again?
