Voodoo in the Big Easy
Monte's on the Square - Start Tour
You are about to embark on a journey through the eyes of Delphine Duval, the Voodoo Queen of Benjamin Franklin High. Listen carefully and follow her every move through the Big Easy. You can put your device away now.
Delphine Duval stood in front of Monty's on the Square, looking at Decatur St. To her right, past the small pedestrian lane, was Jackson Square. She was trying to ignore the hundreds of tourists swirling around her. It didn’t matter what time of year it was… the French Quarter was always infested with out-of-towners.
She faced away from Monty's, with the busy Decatur Street on her left, and headed towards the entrance to Jackson Square, the pristine gardens behind an iron fence.
People were laughing, eating little French donuts called Beignets, and drinking Hurricanes, sugary strong cocktails trademarked by bar owner, Pat O’Brien. Both were New Orleans staples, although she couldn’t remember the last time she had enjoyed either. At only 17, she was technically too young for a Hurricane… but let’s face it. When the Voodoo Queen of Benjamin Franklin High wanted something, a silly little thing like age wasn’t going to get in her way.
She was annoyed. She had come down here to find a Cottonmouth snake, and even though she had trekked along the muddy shore for hours, she was still empty handed.
She continued walking straight.
