Tour Locations | Oral History Tour of Madrid, NM: The Town Too High To Die
This is the Huber House, the former throne of power in the benevolent dictatorship that was this company town.
First we’ll hear from Joanna and Mary Huber. Then Carmen, with a different point-of-view, followed by Hugh, Josie, John and Mike.
The Turquoise Trail, this portion of which winds through Madrid, was a pre-Colombian trade route which still runs down to Mexico City and beyond. Locally-mined turquoise was traded for jungle rarities such as exotic birds, hence “the Trading Bird.” In addition to turquoise, this shop specializes in world-renowned Mata Ortiz pottery.
When finished here, continue on to next shop north, Conley Studio.
