A Walk through Keene's History
Welcome to Central Square. Stop here for a moment next to the statue.
The Central Square is really a circle and has been a part of the town's layout since it was a settlement. It has always been an iconic landmark in Keene.
You're standing next to Keene's Civil War Soldier's Monument. Keene's first Civil War Memorial day was on May 30, 1868. This was three years after the end of the Civil War. It was held to remember soldiers that died during the war. On that first Memorial Day, there was a parade of soldiers, sailors, fire companies, school children, and the Keene Brass band. There was also a cart decorated with flowers. It was pulled by four white horses. The Soldier's Monument was built in 1871, six years after the war ended.
Feel free to browse around Central Square. Look at the fountain, statues, and gazebo. When you're ready, walk along the path to the right of the Gazebo, in the direction of the towering white spire across the street.
