Flåm Railway is one of the world’s steepest train routes and is best-known for its spectacular tunnels that spiral in and out of the mountain. On this scenic Norwegian rail journey from the Flåmsbana station in Flåm to Myrdal, you’ll hear about the train’s history, local attractions, and what to do while you’re in the Aurland region.

On this 20-kilometre journey you’ll see Norwegian nature at its most magnificent, and stunning views at every turn. The trip starts in the village of Flåm in the innermost section of Aurland fjord’s which forms part of the world’s longest fjord, the Sognefjord. Along the way, you’ll pass and hear about several picturesque hamlets and stations, including Dalsbotn, Berekvam, Blomheller, Lunden, Reinunga and Vatnahalsen, where the spectacular Flåm Zipline starts.

One suggestion that you might consider, is to walk down the “Rallarvegen Road” that takes you from Myrdal all the way back to Flåm. You can walk or use bicycle, of course.

The “Rallarvegen” follows the track of the Flåm Railway almost all the way, along the Flåm Valley down to Flåm, and makes the stretch ideal for a stroll….even if most people is choosing to cycle the section. The view and the magnificent landscape have made the “Rallarvegen” famous for both cyclists and hikers all over the World. The first part of the road is the most demanding, as the thin dusty road winds down the steep mountain side. But, once you have passed the mountainside, the rest of the journey is quite flat throughout the valley.

A "Rallar" was a construction worker who worked on building the railway, and in order for them to get there with machines and equipment, a road also had to be built.

The road is 80 km long, and runs from Haugastøl on Hardangervidda mountain, over Finse to Myrdal, and further down steeply through 21 hairpin bends along the Flåmsbanen to Flåm - by the Aurlandsfjorden. The last part is today a public municipal road.

There is also a similar road from Voss to Upsete on the west side of the Gravhals tunnel.

The construction of Rallarvegen started in the 1890s, the road from Flåm to Myrdal and on to Hallingskeid was ready in 1898, and in 1902 the road was built all the way to Haugastøl up on the high mountain.

The construction was largely carried out as manual labour. Due to the snow conditions, the work was mostly carried out in the summer months, from June to October. In the beginning, materials were pulled up the mountain by horse. As the railway was ready, the railway was used to transport material. Construction sheds, horse stables, water works, telephone lines and power plants were built along the railway. It is suggested that there were a total of around 2,400 "rallare" was working on the mountain.

The road is owned and maintained by the state-owned Norwegian railway company, according to an agreement from 1912 which states that the road must be maintained "so that the road becomes easily passable for pedestrians". For several periods, volunteers, the Tourist Association and the municipalities have also contributed to the maintenance. Previously, the road was maintained in a modern way, but now only methods and materials are used that existed at the time when the road was built. For example, plastic drainage pipes from the 1980s are removed and replaced with dry stone masonry. The maintenance prioritizes the preservation of the road as a national cultural monument.

In the 1960s, editor and former manager of Norske Ungdomsherberger, Odd Strand, took the initiative to build a cycle path along the old construction road. The work was carried out on a voluntary basis from 1970, and completed in August 1974. The road has since become one of Norway's most popular cycle routes, and the supremely most popular cycle tour in the Norwegian mountains; where more than 20,000 people cycle the road every year.
