    Exchange Coffee House

    Cross over to your right.

On your left, is a green building. This used to be the Exchange Coffee House, a meeting place and reading room. This was for middle-class merchants but there were many coffee houses set up to encourage working-class men to drink coffee rather than whisky early in the day. Before 1853, a lot of Dundee pubs opened at 5 o'clock in the morning and workers might turn up to the mills having already had their first drink of the day.
