Changing Neighbourhoods: Walmer Estate and Upper Woodstock
Starting Point: Garden Court Nelson Mandela Boulevard
You’re standing in the parking lot of the Garden Court Nelson Mandela Boulevard, formerly known as the Holiday Inn. To your right, there’s a breathtaking view of the docks in the distance. Often the wind is very strong here. We’ll head up the hill in a minute, where the wind will get worse -- but the views will get better.
But first, turn around and take in your surroundings. Way before the spaced-out plateau of grey concrete was a parking lot, it was the site of Leliebloem Farm. In the 18th and 19th century, this was where the farm house was situated. The farmlands stretched all the way up to the slopes of Devil’s Peak, and for several blocks to either side of us.
My name is Christine and I’ve lived in Walmer Estate for just over a year now. The area has always fascinated me, but I realised that I know very little about it. So, I set out on quest to find out more, which I will tell you more about on this walk. So let's start walking. Turn your back to Garden Court, and head towards the docks until you reach the edge of the parking lot.
VoiceMap uses your location to play commentary automatically, so you can just put your phone away and focus on your surroundings. I'll give you directions to keep you on track. There might be a bit of silence now and again, but you can just keep walking and my voice will kick in at each location.
