About the Tour

Bangkok's Nana area is known for one thing - its legendary nightlife centered around Nana Plaza, one of the city's best known red light districts. But there's so much more to see than just that. Tucked away in hidden corners and down narrow alleys is great food, cool bars, historic clubs, and even a movie set or two. Plus, the huge variety of people that live and work in this neighborhood. Put all that together and you have an area that's ripe for exploration - providing you know where to go.

When my best friend and roommate said "We should go to Thailand" in 2000, I said "I can't just go to Thailand." He said "Why not?" and - unusually - I didn't have a witty retort. I guess I could go to Thailand. We planned on 4 months of jungle and beach adventures, but my friend didn't end up liking the confusing, scrappy backpacker lifestyle and left after 12 days. With nothing better to do, I stayed behind - and never left.

In the years since I’ve taught English, worked as a team building facilitator, done voice overs, gotten beat up and shot (in movies), performed standup comedy, worked at a bank (ugh), in travel (yay!), and have written enough travel stories to fill a very short book.

I love exploring Bangkok and love showing people why it's such an interesting city. It's onion-like layers never fail to surprise. In the years since I've been here it's changed quite a lot, in interesting, exciting, and sometimes sad ways. You could never say it's the most beautiful city in the world, but it's definitely one of the most interesting.

Tips

Places to stop along the way

The Middle Eastern food in this area is superb, and there are plenty of places on the tour to order a refreshing beverage and learn a bit about its history.

Best time of day

This tour is best started around 8pm. There are plenty of places to stop for food too, so don't head out on a full stomach.

Precautions

Pickpocketing isn't unheard of, and watch bags or phones - motorcycles have been known to fly by and snatch them out of hands. Also, if you plan to drink it up, that's fine, but if you're the type who gets loud or pushy, watch yourself. It's normally very safe, but this is NOT the area to get into angry disagreements with locals. And if you happen into any of the girlie bars, DO NOT try and sneak a photo. You will be caught and thrown out on your ass.
