This is one of at least 5 representations of Venus in these gardens. It wasn't enough for Louis XIV to show off his power and cleverness alone. People must also know that he had refined taste and an appreciation for beauty. They were equally welcome to infer that he possessed those qualities himself. At the very least, they should be impressed by the attractiveness of his owned objects, and the kept women in his entourage.
