    Zanesville a Real Ghost Town

Ready to pass through another Ghost town? When we pass under the bridge ahead at Exit 63, we will be passing through Zanesville. While Zanesville is still marked on most maps, clearly there are no signs of a city here. That’s because Zanesville is long gone and has been for more than a century.

In the late 1860s, Zanesville was a happenin place. Beneath the bridge ahead, there was a post office, four large general stores, three blacksmith shops, two wagon shops, two hotels, a copper shop, and two saloons. So, what happened? More accurately, it’s what didn’t happen.

The Wabash Railroad decided to run its line a couple miles to our right and by the mid-1800s, all that remained here was a grocery store and a blacksmith shop. Obviously, those are now gone too. However, Zanesville still is a spot on the map.
