The oldest covered bridge in Illinois is located just a few miles to our left. The first settlers to this area arrived around 1814 and in 1827, built a bridge over Sugar Creek. Sometime before 1880, that bridge was converted to a covered bridge. There are only 10 covered bridges built prior to 1900 that are still standing in Illinois, and our oldest, is less than a half mile from here, buried in those trees to our left.
