• LOCATION 32 | Interstate 55: St. Louis, MO to Springfield, IL

To our left is the City of Staunton, named after one of its earliest settlers, Mr. Stanton, spelled S-T-A-N-T-O-N. Stanton donated some of his land for a village square and in return, the folks around here decided to name the village after him. However, after they applied for a post office, the post-office approval they received from Washington DC, for whatever reason, added a “u” to the middle of Stanton’s name. Nobody in the village felt like going through the hassle of correcting the error and so, while those here continued to pronounce the name of the village Stanton, they spelled it with a “u.” The story goes, several decades later, the residents here had so much coal dust in their throats that it became difficult to pronounce the word Stanton, so they started pronouncing the name of the village Staunton, just like it is spelled. And that pronunciation continues to this day.
