After passing under the bridge ahead, we will be in Sangamon County. The word “Sangamon” comes from the Potawatomie Native Americans and means “where there is plenty to eat.” Before the earliest settlers arrived, the land around us was full of deer, elk, buffalo, bears, panthers, wolves, wild turkeys and wild chickens. Other Native American tribes referred to this area as “Happy Hunting Grounds.”
