    Outer Space Visitor

While gangsters were not uncommon to this area, there can be little doubt that the most alarming, surprising, and possibly unwelcome visitor to this area came from outer space. It was a clear morning on September 29, 1938, when around 9am, in the sky ahead of us and traveling from right to left at a speed of over 100,000 miles an hour, was something that sounded like a rocket descending from the sky.

About 4 miles to our left, a Benld resident was outside her home at the time and heard what she described as the sound of a plane crashing somewhere on her property. Upon further inspection, she found nothing out of the ordinary.

Later that afternoon, her neighbor went into his garage to take his car out. He found not only a hole in the roof of his garage, but a hole in the roof of his car. And there, wedged in the passenger seat, was a meteorite the size of a lemon.

During the past 100 years, only 10 meteorites have been documented to have landed in Illinois, so the chance of one striking us during this tour is rather slim.
