National City and Gateway Motorsports Park

A few hundred yards to our left, on the other side of this concrete web of Interstate interchange, once existed National City, better known as “Hog Capital of the Nation.” Three giant factories once dominated the 1 square mile city just to our left, along with a huge stockyard and many small factories where less than a 100 years ago, more than 200 pigs, 900 cattle, 350 sheep, and 16 horses, were butchered and processed here each day, where the saying went, “every part of the pig was used except the squeal.”

In 1996, the City evicted all of its residents and officially dissolved a year later. Most of the city has been leveled, and the only squeal that can now be heard around here comes from tires at Gateway Motorsports Park, one of our nation’s premier race tracks where millions of racing fans are treated to dozens of international drag races and Indy car events each year.

Preview mode limited to first 3 locations.
