    More Industrial Cities

We are traveling through a region that was dominated by industry around the turn of the 20th Century, and many of the cities near here owe their existence to industry. On the horizon to our left are two large factories marking Granite City, created by an iron-based Kitchenware company during the late 1800s and now home to US Steel. Wood River is 15 miles to our left and was created by Standard Oil in the early 1900s. Washington Park, a couple miles to our right, was home to a chemical factory during WWI, and Fairmont City, just behind the trees to our right, was dominated by a Zinc Smelting Company that opened in 1914. Pontoon Beach is one of the exceptions, as it was named for a road built on pontoons over a lake that has since dried up.
