    Missile Silos

Ahead of us is Fruit Road, and five miles down this road to our right are the remains of a Nike missile silo. Imagine we are at this exact location 60 years ago. We hear the distant air raid sirens as an announcer interrupts our program to inform us that Russian bombers have penetrated the US Air Force and are on a direct course to St. Louis. To our right, where that blue water tower peaks above the trees, several missiles blast into the sky quickly flying over our heads at 2,700 mph hoping to intercept those Russian bombers.

This missile site, along with three others surrounding St. Louis, were the city’s last line of defense during the first half of the Cold War. The site closed by 1970, and the only time it was ever on high alert was during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Most of the original buildings are still standing but are now being used by the county for storage.
