    Crown Mines

Once again, we above empty mining tunnels as the coal that was once below was mined just a few decades ago. The entrance to the tunnels below us is located below the wind turbine on that hill ahead of us and slightly to our right. That was the location of the entrance to Crown Mine Number One which operated from 1951 to 1971.

Two other Crown Mines opened in the area, Crown Mine Number Three which dominates the horizon about four miles to our left and Crown Mine Number Two also about four miles to our left after we pass Farmersville. Combined, these three mines extracted more than 110 million tons of coal, that’s enough coal to fill railroad cars lined up back to back from here to Australia. When Crown Mine Number Three closed in 2013, it was the last Union Mine in Illinois.
