    Towards Banchi di Sopra

You've been walking up the main shopping street where, especially in the afternoon, locals love walking back and forth, meeting their friends etc. Even off-site students have adopted this habit. It's part of what makes Siena feel more like a big village where everybody knows the others perfectly well rather than a city.

Before I forget, let me remind you that Siena university counts among the oldest established in Italy and still operates today. It dates back to 1241 when the only existing faculties where medicine and law.

    Keep going straight.

A few steps further you'll notice a beautiful travertine building on the left: the imposing Tolomei palace dates back to the 1200s and it is certainly worth a picture, being one of the oldest facades in Siena.
