Philadelphia's Lost Waterfront
Cuthbert Street and Another Set of Steps
On your right now is Cuthbert Street. It's one of several enchanting alleys and courtyards in Old City with handsome residential structures from the nineteenth century. We've almost reached the end of the tour, so keep going straight for now. But if you want to come back here afterwards, it’s well worth wandering down this street, all narrow and quaint in the old Philadelphia way.
Here on the river side of Front Street was yet another set of Penn Steps. Many of these stairwells had been blocked off during the yellow fever epidemics of the 1790s. Plus, some of the stairs were annexed by adjacent property owners. The one here lasted until the early 20th century.
Keep going straight. We're almost back where we started.
