Tour Locations | INFINITE CITY #4: Riots, Disasters and Bachelor Clubs
Stop here and look at the building to your right. Imagine the massive marble masterpiece that once stood here.
To save money in its construction, the university used prison labor to cut the marble, bypassing the high prices of the stone cutter’s union.
In 1834, while the building was under construction, the stone cutters revolted. They rioted through the streets in their work clothes, carrying their hammers and tools.
City officials panicked and called in the national guard. The soldiers dispersed the rioters and set up camp in this park to protect the construction site. The standoff lasted three days.
Keep walking to the end of the block.
