Tour Locations | Derrie Danders: A Guide to the Quayside and North City
The Quay - Boating Club Lane
We are now approaching Boating Club Lane on our left.
You may have noticed across the road on your left, a number of restaurants including "Mama Masala" which serves a mixture of Indian and Italian dishes. The unusually shaped building on your left which now houses the Quay West restaurant is the former Boat Club in the city. It was designed by the famous local architect John Guy Ferguson, who also designed the Guildhall, the Apprentices Boys Memorial Hall and many other buildings within the city.
Over to the left of the former Boating Club are some modern buildings which form the campus of the North West Regional College, which is the main technical or vocational college in the city. Some years ago I attended an evening class on Tour Guiding, which ultimately led to the establishment of my Derrie Danders Walking Tour business and the audio guide you are listening to today.
Also over to the left behind the Boating Club and across the road is part of the campus of the University of Ulster, which is the city's further education college. We will be visiting this later in our tour.
If you look down the river to your right, then you will see the Foyle Bridge more clearly. Opened in 1984, it was designed to allow ships to pass through and is a busy dual carriageway. Because of its height, when there are strong winds in the area, the bridge has to be closed or has speed or vehicle size restrictions, which causes major traffic jams in the city.
Continue walking. We will also soon be approaching the Foyle Port Marina, and when we reach it, I will tell you more about the Clipper Race and Festival that has visited the city in the past.
