Memories of Bromwell Street
Rumina grew up in this street when most of the surrounding suburbs were affected by the Group Areas Act.
"Bromwell Street for us was a very close-knit community, and that time, family was like your child is my child, and really it was, your child is my child. We really looked out for each other. If the kids were playing in the streets, even after sunset, then our neighbour would pull us by the ear and get us home, and say, you know, this is the wrong time to be on the road. But it was really… we grew up with a lot of different communities, we can say we had Indian neighbours, we had Christian neighbours, we had Muslim neighbours, we had a few Portuguese neighbours. We all grew up together and we were one good, really happy family."
