Turn right into Grape Lane - before this Grope Lane.
The family friendly version of the tour will tell you this comes from the narrowness of the street. In the dark its hard to see and therefore you have to grope your way along.
This is untrue - being a port Whitby had an abundance of sailors and there was abundant demand for, shall we say, certain services. This all happened here.
Grape Lane is associated with one of Whitby's most well-known ghosts - that of the burning girl. The story goes that the long golden hair of this young girl was caught in a baker's oven and she tragically died. Her ghost can still be seen with flames emanating from her hair.
I've never seen anything but I always avoid this street after dark.
